The arrival of the lunar month of Welehu and the rising of the Makali‘i or Pleiades at sunset, signal the end of the Hawaiian calendar year and the start of a new year. They also mark the beginning of Ho‘oilo, the winter or rainy season as well as the start of the Makahiki, a time of thanksgiving, of rest and recuperation, and of merriment and joy. All of KANU are awaiting these events with eager anticipation because it marks the beginning of our makahiki season when we launch multiple Hawaiian makahiki ceremonies to honor the traditions and customary cultural practices of our Hawaiian kūpuna. More information about makahiki, including details regarding events and schedules will be provided in the Hunehune Kalo throughout makahiki season.
