Hunehune Kalo - August 20, 2009

‘Ōlelo No‘eauOur haumāna, returning and new, have had a great first week; and on Monday we welcomed our first pre-schoolers. (See page 2 on Mālamapōki‘i.) School year 2009-2010 promises to be an exciting one, filled with stimulating activities, fun, yet meaningful actions, and invigorating learning opportunities for all of us.

Prior to the arrival of our students, our entire teaching staff spent two weeks of professional development, engaged in intensive curriculum planning, dialogue and sharing of ideas, to ensure that your keiki receive a quality education at KANU. All of us can be truly proud of the dedication and diligence exhibited by KANU’s teaching staff, and the obvious commitment to külia i ka nu‘u. This commitment is demonstrated in our ongoing efforts to map our K-12 curriculum for our upcoming accreditation visit, scheduled for Spring Semester 2010. Please read upcoming HUNEHUNE KALO to stay informed about this very important accreditation process and find out how you and your ‘ohana can contribute to this important milestone for KANU.

In keeping with our emphasis on project and place-based learning, our students have already begun to forge into their community and embarked on or are planning huaka‘i, or research expeditions, into the environment. This week, grades 4 and 5 visited an ipu farm in Kona to learn how ipu grow, so they can grow their own ipu to gather water in their study of wai. Grades 2 and 3 have started their weekly visits to Kawaihae to study the kai. Next week, the keiki in grades K-1 will visit the forests of Kalöpä State Park as part of their study of wet and dryland forests.
